How can counselling help with depression?

Depression can look and feel different between people. However, common symptoms tend to include:

  • lack of motivation

  • loss of interest in daily life

  • sexual difficulties

  • loss of purpose or meaning

  • feeling numb

  • pessimism about the future

  • loss of interest in relationships

  • sleep difficulties

The causes of depression are contested in the research. Some say that it's linked to chemical imbalances in the brain. Others say it's about not doing what gives you joy. My approach tends to view depression through the lens of 'loss' and relationships which is the longest-standing theory of depression. Although loss isn't always visible, loss can exist in various forms: loss of a loved one, an idea, a career, health, money...etc. When these losses are not 'grieved' properly, they get held onto which has a tendency to cause an internal deadening.

There is also evidence that depression is linked to difficulties in relationships, and specific patterns of relating can usually be identified which make the depression worse. When these are worked through, and when the loss is acknowledged, the symptoms tend to lift.

I offer both short-term treatment for depression (Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy) and treatment for longer-standing depression.
